Trying to Beat the Random Number Generator (RNG) in Online Casino Games

Updated: Mar 7, 2023

Whenever you are exploring on the products or games offered by Online Casino Operators or Platforms, you will find many of those colorful and glittery online games trying to catch your attention where people can place bet with their money for a thrilling sensation; aiming to win as much as they can. Many of these computerized games are operating via a Random Number Generators (RNG) system.

"Firstly, before trying to beat the RNG in online casino games, let’s explore further and understand better. RNG is generally the heartbeat of the online gaming industry."

A Quick Introduction to RNG

It’s what determines the game result in devices like slot games, roulette simulator games, cards simulator games, number simulator games (such as the commonly played KENO games) and etc; showing various attractive and appealing computer animations that via its RNG to determine the final winning result. Without them, fairness would be impossible in online casinos. With such computerized RNG, a mathematical formula guarantees that every wheel spun, dice rolled, card dealt or number drawn is entirely random. In other words, it is a computational program using algorithm formulas designed to randomly generate a sequence of symbols, cards and/or numbers.

Types of RNG

There are two (2) different types of RNG, namely the True Random Number Generators (TRNG) and the Pseudo Random Number Generators (PRNG). We will be explaining more on the Pseudo Random Number Generators (PRNG) mechanism as it is widely used by online casino game developers.

Pseudo means “fake” and PRNG is a computer program that randomizes numbers in achieving the unpredictable results. The randomization is based on a set of rules; using the combination of the internal clock of computers (which starts from an arbitrary starting state using a seed state) and an algorithm to determine the random result. Such mechanism is not fully secured, as the result can be exposed to possible predictions in some ways, especially when the starting point in the sequence is known.

Due to such risk, game developers often use an enhanced secure version of PRNG instead, which is also known as the Cryptographically Secure Pseudorandom Number Generator (CSPRNG). It comprises of properties that make it suitable for use in cryptography. Cryptography is the science of protecting information by transforming it into a secure format. A CSPRNG has a different goal. It must satisfy all the statistical randomness tests a statistical PRNG does, but it also needs to be unpredictable. It is designed to resist attempts by a human to predict its next output; it should be hard to tell it from a truly random sequence even if the human knows the algorithm being used.

Trying to Beat the RNG

All online casino games are game of chance and the result is a completely random event. It produces so many numbers in a sequence; resulting such pattern variations to be completely unrecognizable.

"Usually if someone asks me whether they can beat the RNG in online casino games, my answer would be NO."

There may be some games over whose outcome you might have some influence, which adds an element of skill, but for the most popular games like slots and table games you ultimately need luck on your side. You will never know what exactly is going to happen and that really is where the fun lies and why there are so many online gamblers nowadays.

Some online gamblers also may say the RNG program in online casino games can be manipulated, which is why online casino operators are making huge profits out of it. Somehow, this happens especially when a player lost huge and with the adding of emotional distress, they often condemn and blame the online casino platform for being dishonest.

Many online casino platforms nowadays ensure high integrity in their products offered so that their highly valued players are given a fair, honest and transparent gaming environment. Game developers even put in additional effort by sending their RNG online games to undergo a series of testing evaluations and audits by independent regulators such as the Gaming Laboratories International (GLI), eCOGRA, BMM Testlabs and etc in return for an official certification towards fair gaming.

In reality, online casino platforms rely on the house edge or advantage of its games, which is calculated based on the reversed order of Return to Player (RTP) to make up its revenue. In the competitive online gaming industry, market players often offer online games with RTP ranging from 97.50% to 98.00%, which subsequently translates into a house edge or advantage of 2.00% to 2.50%. This basically illustrates the nature of online casino gaming, with some appeared to be winners and some to be the losers.

Let’s say for example if you were to make evaluation on 100 rounds of online casino regularly played SIC BO (or also known as TAI XIU in come online casino platforms) over a short period of time. Here you may see many more results on BIG than SMALL or visa versa. However, if you were to do this over, let’s say, 10 million rounds over a longer period of time, you should see that roughly there would be an even result outcome between BIG and SMALL.

"Therefore, there is no need for a game developer who had sent its games for an official gaming certification to be dishonest as this is a long term business investment and online casinos are looking forward to returning customers. This is also why, upon officially certifying a game, the RTPs are often published by the operators for players’ easy reference."
